Megansett

by Christopher Morley

During the summers in high school, I was a sailing instructor at the Megansett Yacht Club in North Falmouth, Massachusetts. (Falmouth is pronouced FAL'mith, like Plymouth and Portsmouth).

Megansett is a place that I hold a lot of sentiment for and I believe that it is a magical place.

The word Megansett has a meaning and is parsed as follows in Native American and perhaps (believe it or not) Icelandic. ME- meaning "to" (action verb), GAN meaning "going", "trip" or "voyage" and SETT meaning "place", "homestead" or "settlement" to mean "place to voyage (from)" which makes sense since it is a relatively calm cove sheltering Squeteague Harbor (a good place for fishing). The land also has high ground features, and it would also be good for setting out from in a canoe if you were Wampanoag or Nauset, as one would ease gradually into any inclement weather on the water and have time to turn back safely.

An interesting feature is the Amrita Island Mansion which has dome features fashioned after the Taj Mahal and a prominent on-site tomb built out of stone that displays an engraved caption: "Love Is Eternal".

Other things to see and do: Megansett Beach, Megansett Yacht Club, the Chart Room and Periwinkles, the Daily Brew, the Silver Lounge, the Beach House, the Parrot, Old Silver Beach, the Bike Trail, Mini-golf, "real" Golf, movies at Mashpee Common, the Superette, Holy Cow, North Falmouth House of Pizza, Talk of the Town, Dean's, Blockbuster.
